Snuggled in Hope Quilts: How do we do it?
Volunteers meet in the Fellowship Hall of 1st Presbyterian Church in
Mount Gilead, the first Monday of each month from 9:00-2:00
(see Sewing/Tie Day page for our exact schedule of the year,
or Schedule an Event tab for more information).
It is a new twist to an old-fashioned "Quilting Bee".
Volunteers gather to work on all parts of the creation and construction of the quilts. You DO NOT have to know how to sew, or quilt, because there are plenty of other opportunities to help. The volunteers have many levels of experience, but one thing in common-coming together to donate their time and talents; women, men, and children. We are a diverse group; many of our volunteers do not quilt or sew. We need people to press wrinkles out of fabric, thread a needle, snip a thread, tie knots. Can you tie a shoestring? If so, you can help! We sort and prepare fabrics, and, yes, some do actually use a sewing machine to sew the pieces and parts together during the process. We will lead you through the process and find a place that you feel comfortable. There is always space at our tables for volunteers.
There are mini-lessons, we have take-make-and-return kits available, and a lot of sharing -not just ideas about sewing, either.
Supplies are provided, but if you are more comfortable with your own, feel free to bring them along. And bring a friend or two along while you're at it. There are plenty of good old fashioned conversations going on among our volunteers.
Every few months we hold a special "Sew-in" event. We select a pattern or two and work together toward completing projects. In order to find out more about these events, we need an email to send the information, or check out our posts on Facebook.
We offer a light lunch, or you can bring your own, and stay all day, or stop in for a short time, see what we are about and how you can help. It feels good to be making a difference in the life of a child who lives with a serious illness.
Our winter weather policy:
If Mount Gilead Schools are closed, so are we. If in doubt, don't risk coming out!
